Dhoni changed the indian team

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's leadership has changed the face of Indian cricket, according to Pakistan's pace legend Wasim Akram who believes it is a matter of time before India upstages Australia as the number one team in the world.

Akram said Dhoni has completely transformed the team ever since he took over the mantle of captaincy and that Indian cricket was on the right track with a number of talented players in their ranks.

"Dhoni has changed the face of Indian cricket, there is no doubt about that. He leads from the front, he has charisma and players like him. You can't ask for anything more," Akram said in a telephonic interview.

"He has given the team the confidence. The players now believe that they can go and beat any team and it is this confidence that has helped India to bring about the desired results," the former Pakistan captain said.

Akram, regarded as one of the finest left-arm speedsters with 414 Test and 502 ODI wickets to his credit in a career spanning nearly 17 years, said Dhoni had also brought about a refreshing change in his attitude and approach to matches.

"It does not matter whether Sachin Tendulkar is resting or some other players are injured, the Indians are so confident that they go out and do the job. It was not the case about six or seven years ago, India did not have that confidence," he observed.

"If the captain leads from the front, half the job is done. That is what I like about Dhoni. He is cool, comes out with few quotes and gets the best out of his players," Akram said.

"Leading the Chennai team in the upcoming Champions League will be a good challenge for him since there will be a lot of international teams," he said.

Asked whether India would be able to topple Australia as the number one team in the near future, Akram said "India is the new Australia. I think they are on the right track to achieve that".

Akram also lavished praise on India's new pace sensation Ishant Sharma saying the Delhi youngster had improved by leaps and bounds in the last few months.

"Ishant has been a revelation. He has really improved in the last few months and I think he is a real asset to India," Akram said about the paceman who emerged as the man-of-the-series in the recent Test series against Australia.

"After the Australian tour late last year, his length was slightly short. But he has now rectified that and was simply brilliant in the recent series against Australia. The way he bowled, it seemed he had been around in Test cricket for five years or so," he said.

The cricketer-turned-commentator said Ishant will only get better with time but also cautioned that the youngster needed to be handled well to prolong his career.

"He (Ishant) will get quicker and better with time, there is no doubt about it. He just has to keep himself fit as fast bowling is hard work," Akram pointed out.

He said the Indian bowling line-up looked quite balanced at the moment and the presence of an in-form Zaheer Khan has provided a lot more sting.

"Zaheer has been fantastic. He has bowled the reverse swing well, got the ball to swing in and out... he has become a complete bowler now. He really provides that cutting edge to the attack," he said.

"India always had good spinners but I am happy to see these pacemen developing. They are winning matches for India", Akram said.

The ex-pacer said Harbhajan Singh was capable enough to shoulder the responsibility in the spin department following the retirement of champion leg spinner Anil Kumble.

"Harbhajan is a good spinner. It is now upto him to take upon the responsibility in the spin department. I think he is capable of doing it and also has the experience".

Akram also credited India's rise as a cricketing nation to the planning done by the BCCI over the last few years.

"Credit must also go the BCCI for India's rise in recent times. They have planned and implemented everything well. The results have started coming now," he added.

India us england fourth ODI series

Bad weather conditions have turned out to be better at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore and it seems India and England will soon resume fourth ODI match.

Around an hour back, rain interrupted the fourth ODI between India and England. India were at 81/2 when umpires DJ Harper and AM Saheba asked the sides to halt the play.

Unstoppable Delhi boy Virender Sehwag completed 6000-run mark before the match was intervened by rain.

Sehwag (45*) along with Gambhir(23*) will resume batting for India after the weather conditions turn better.

Earlier in the match, England pacer Stuart Broad got an early breakthrough for his side by clinching the invaluable wicket of Sachin Tendulkar for 11 runs.

England, on the other hand, retained the same side that played in Kanpur.

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar came back in the team when Team India decided to rest Rohit Sharma. The veteran player opened with Virender Sehwag after England captain Kevin Pietersen asked India to bat first.

India are just one win away from wrapping up the seven-match series, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his bravehearts are eager to maintain their winning sequence in the floodlit encounter in Bangalore.

The visitors, on the contrary, have been left with the daunting task of winning four matches in a row to clinch the series and it seems to be a hard nut to crack to stop the Indian juggernaut.

yuvraj movie review

After winning the best music director award in 2006 (Rang De Basanti) and giving an outstanding score this year with Guru and just two days back bagging the Filmfare for Sillunu Oru Kadhal and enthralling us all with Sivaji, Rahman is getting ready to deliver his next big album.

He will be scoring music for the Dream Merchant’s (Subhash Ghai) directorial venture to be produced by his own Muktha Arts. The movie titled “Yuvraj” is slated to begin shortly with a schedule in Europe.

The movie has a big star line up with Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Boman Irani playing the lead characters. The movie is very important for Subhash Ghai as his last few directorial ventures had been losing propositions. Especially his last movie, Kisna, a Vivek Oberoi starrer had sunk at the box office. Yuvraj is expected to arrive some time in early 2008.

India Won third ODI us england

Poor light saw D/L method playing the decisive role as India won the third ODI at Kanpur by 16 runs. Chasing 240, India were 16 runs ahead of the revised target and finished with at 198/5.

England's all-rounder Andrew Flintoff broke the 52-run partnership between MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh after he dismissed the latter for 38 runs in the third ODI at Kanpur.

After flaying England bowlers, Yuvraj mistimed a pull shot off a short delivery and found Stuart Broad at the deep square leg. In his knock of 38 runs, Yuvraj slammed two fours and one six. He fell as Flintoff's third wicket. Previously, Freddie dismissed Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir.

Sehwag sliced one from Freddie in the gully region and Paul Collingwood took an unbelievable catch to see the dangerous Indian opener back in the hut. Sehwag raised 31st ODI half-century, his fifth against England. He had added 73 runs with Rohit Sharma for the third wicket before England spinner Graeme Swann dismissed the latter for 28 runs as the third Indian wicket. Sharma tried to cut a delivery but his late movement saw the ball taking a thick edge of his bat before wicketkeeper Matt Prior gloved it.

Sehwag lost his opening partner Gautam Gambhir early in the innings. Flintoff picked his wicket when Gambhir chipped a short ball and Stuart Broad caught him at third man for 14 runs. Broad carried the momentum and hurriedly dismissed Raina for 1 run. A good-length delivery swung back in and took an inside edge of Raina's wicket before crashing into the leg-stump.

Earlier, on what was predicted to be a batting track, England fell well short by at least 30-40 runs as India bundled them for 240 runs in 48.4 overs. India's off-spinner Harbhajan Singh picked three wickets and also completed his 200 ODI wickets. He became the sixth Indian bowler to cross the 200-mark after Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Ajit Agarkar, Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan. He achieved this feat when he dismissed Owais Shah for 40 runs. Shah holed one from Harbhajan to Zaheer at long-off.

Kevin Pietersen and Paul Collingwood were his first two victims whom he foxed with his 'doosra' and removed in quick succession. He first deceived Pietersen (13) as the English skipper went for the lofted drive and found Zaheer at long-off. Bhajji's next victim, Collingwood was beaten by the flight. He lunged forward to drive the ball but lost the balance and wicketkeeper MS Dhoni stumped him for just 1 run.

After a steady start from openers Ravi Bopara and Ian Bell, England lost the plot and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Bopara, who was promoted as the opener in place of Matt Prior, gave a good start to his side along with Ian Bell. They added 79 runs for the first wicket when Indian pacer Munaf Patel gave India the first breakthrough. He dismissed Bell for 46 runs. A good-length delivery from Munaf took a faint edge of Bell's bat before landing in the gloves of Dhoni. Munaf also dismissed James Anderson as the last wicket of the innings with a straight delivery knocking off the middle stump.

While his partner missed out on a fifty, Bopara got one up in the order. He slammed fourth ODI fifty, his second against India, with the help of eight fours. He was removed by Yuvraj Singh for 60 runs. Yuvraj's short of length delivery drew Bopara out of the crease. The ball beat him and Dhoni made no mistake behind the wickets to knock off the bails.

Andrew Flintoff was done by Yusuf Pathan for 26 runs. The ball pitched in the line of off and middle. Flinotff tried to play across the line and the ball hit him on the knee-roll.

Ishant Sharma, who replaced RP Singh, struggled with his bowling but finished with two wickets of Samit Patel and Matt Prior. While Patel (26) was caught by Suresh Raina at long-off, Prior missed the next delivery that kissed the leg-stump and sent him packing for 5 runs. Zaheer picked Stuart Broad's wicket as he surprised him with a short ball and Dhoni took a simple catch behind the stumps.

vaaranam aayiram movie review

Goutham Menon can chase away the butterflies in his stomach and ask his heart to take it a bit easy as his latest film starring Suriya ‘Varanam Aayiram’ is witnessing tremendous bookings in advance.

The advance booking opened on the 12th of November and the two days before its release has been nothing short of dramatic. Be it Sathyam Cinemas, Abirami, Albert, Sangam, Inox or Mayajaal booking has been very good and the tickets have been almost sold out for about a week.

The proof of the pudding would be in the eating tomorrow when the movie releases. The USP of the film is Suriya appearing in many getups and of course Goutham Menon’s direction.

Mayajaal will be screening the film as many as 38 times a day. Inox too is booked for the weekend and most booking has been through the internet.

Female crowds for the film are expected to be very high as is the case with most Suriya films. The actor plays characters that span many years, right from being a schoolboy to that of an old man. An exciting prospect for Suriya fans. The film also has Divya Spandana, Sameera Reddy and Simran as the leading ladies.

This sure is the season of ‘Varanam Aayiram’.

India won the series against aussies

India on Monday gave ample proof of its status as a dominant force in world cricket as they thrashed Australia by 172 runs in the fourth and final Test to regain the coveted Border-Gavaskar trophy after a gap of four years on Monday.

After settting the visitors a daunting target of 382 for victory, the Indians exploited a turning fifth day track to skittle out the Aussies for 209 just before the tea break to wrap up the four-match series with a 2-0 margin.

It turned out to be a perfect gift for Sourav Ganguly by his teammates in his farewell Test as they knocked out the Aussies in just about two sessions of play on the last day.

Only Matthew Hayden stood bravely amidst the ruins with a 93-ball 77 as the Indian bowlers ripped through the batting line up to bring an end to the Australian innings rather quickly.

Leg spinner Amit Mishra (3/27) and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh (4/64) were the main destructors for the hosts who made amends for losing the home series 1-2 in the 2004-05 series.

Opener Hayden, let off twice in his 30s, showed the most defiance from the tourists' ranks and top-scored with 77 off 93 balls with eight fours and a six before being fifth out and the end came swiftly after the departure of the Queenslander midway into the second session.

Fast bowler Ishant Sharma took the first two of three Australian wickets to set India on their way to a deserving victory after which the spin duo of Harbhajan and Mishra spun a web of deceit to skittle the rest.

The end came when last man Mitchell was declared out leg before offering no shot to Harbhajan Singh before tea.

Australia lost their wickets at regular intervals after a fighting partnership between Hayden and Hussey was broken by young Mishra who had the latter caught at slip by Rahul Dravid who had a forgettable match with the bat and as a slip fielder too.

India, thus, finished on a victorious note to give a fitting send-off to Sourav Ganguly who had announced before the commencement of the series in Bangalore on October 9 that he will quit the game after this series.

The former India skipper, who missed the chance to score a century in his farewell appearance after having started his Test career with a bang a debut ton at Lord's in 1996 faded from the limelight with the happiness that he was part of a victorious team at the end.

He was chaired off the ground after being hugged by all his teammates and the Australian players and was also greeted by retired captain Anil Kumble who has returned here from Bangalore to see the finale.

The opening Test was drawn before India thumped the world's highest-ranked team by a huge 320 runs in the second Test at Mohali to take a 1-0 lead which they maintained coming into this Test following the drawn third encounter at Delhi.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who took over the reins from Kumble who retired after the third match of the series at the Ferozshah Kotla, thus continued his golden run at the helm to lead the team to a third straight win in as many matches.

He had led India to wins over South Africa, earlier this year, and at Mohali as stand-in captain for Kumble.

Harbhajan and Mishra, introduced late after lunch, tied the Australian batsmen in knots. Barring the hard-hitting but chancy half century by Hayden, the rest of the batsmen caved in meekly.

The gangling Ishant sent back first innings centurion Simon Katich (16) and Michael Clarke, promoted in the order to score quickly despite being unwell, and Ponting got run-out by Mishra's superb pick-up and throw from mid-off. The spin duo then got into the act and delivered the goods for India.

It was Mishra who gave the important breakthrough in his very first over to send back Michael Hussey for 19 when he and Hayden had taken the visitors to 150 from 82 for three.

Mishra added the wickets of Brad Haddin, caught by Sachin Tendulkar (his 100th Test catch), and Jason Krejza (4), who got stumped by Dhoni.

Harbhajan struck the most important blow in the context of the run-chase by having Hayden leg before with a faster ball as the batsman tried to cart him to the on-side as he had done before with impunity.

The fiesty off spinner also accounted for Brett Lee (0), caught at short leg by Murali Vijay, before trapping Johnson leg before after the last wicket added 18 runs to bring down curtains on the match.

Barack obama challenging the economy

US President-elect Barack Obama has appointed a 17-member high-level team of advisers including billionaire investor Buffet and Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt to guide him in channelising the economy, a media report says.

"US President-elect Barack Obama has appointed a team of high-level advisers including billionaire investor Warren Buffett and Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt to guide his thoughts on the economy ahead of taking office on January 20," the Telegraph report stated.

The team, to be called the Transition Economic Advisory Board (TEAB), will meet for the first time in Chicago on Friday to discuss the state of the economy and the prospect of taking early action. Warren Buffett, Chairman and CEO, Berkshire Hathaway, would participate through speakerphone in the meeting.

Further, the report stated that Obama might use this opportunity to appoint his
first Treasurer Secretary.

The advisory board has 17 members including former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker, whose name has also been connected with the Treasury
job, and former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, who would also be at the meeting at the Chicago Hilton on Friday, the daily said.

At present, Robert Rubin is Chairman and Director of the Executive Committee of global financial services major Citigroup. Besides, corporate America is also well represented in the team, with Time Warner Chairman Dick Parsons and Xerox Chairman Anne Mulcahy and Schmidt, who was a loyal supporter of Obama during his
election campaign, it added.

Other members of the board comprise Laura Tyson, one of Obama's key economic aides, former House of Representatives member David Bonior, two former SEC Commissioners Roel Campos and William Donaldson, and Chairman of the Midwest JP Morgan Chase William Daley, the Telegraph report said.

Further, TIAA-CREF President and CEO Roger Ferguson, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Classic Residence by Hyatt CEO Penny Pritzker, Robert Reich and Laura Tyson from the University of California and DE Shaw Managing Director Lawrence Summers are on the board, it added.

Quantum of solace movie review

James Bond is back, and this time it’s mighty personal. Daniel Craig’s craggy agent picks up exactly where he left off in another bruising thriller that leaves you feeling both drained and exhilarated.

There are hand-to-hand fights that make your eyes water and old-school stunts involving motorbikes, speedboats, jet fighters and expensive cars that give you whiplash just looking at them. Really, nobody does it better than the new 007.

What makes Marc Forster’s film such an intriguing watch is that this is the first of the 22 Bond movies where the plot flows organically from the last instalment, and Quantum of Solace looks a far stronger picture for this rare continuity.

Needless to say the plot is as forbidding as the title. After the death of his girlfriend, Vesper Lynd, at the end of Casino Royale, Bond mixes revenge and duty dangerously as he hunts down the shadowy group that blackmailed Lynd to betray him.

A link to a bank account in Haiti puts Bond on the scent of Mathieu Amalric’s chief creep and ruthless businessman, Dominic Greene. All great Bond adversaries are generously blessed with kinks and quirks and Greene is no different. Amalric has a wonderfully wormy arrogance.

His sidekick, Elvis (Anatole Taubman), sports a monkish fringe, and Tarantino bad looks. But it’s the manner in which Amalric manages to poison all trust in Bond, even from his nearest and dearest, that makes him one of the classic arch-adversaries.

Cold rage threatens to derail Bond’s mission to crack Greene’s dastardly organisation known as Quantum, and I doubt that there’s a better actor at bottling rage than Daniel Craig.

All muscles, he has defined himself as a darker and more bare-knuckle Bond than any of his elegant predecessors.

The deadpan humour is still there. And despite the occasional blasts of visceral and grisly violence, Craig is threatening to become the most popular 007 yet, certainly with the younger generation.

Even the famous Bond babes seem to be getting tougher. Olga Kurylenko’s stunning, hard-as-nails beauty, Camille, has her own private vendetta that she wants to bring to a bloody conclusion, with or without Bond’s help. And Gemma Arterton’s effortlessly foxy Agent Field appeals to the better side of the wounded anti-romantic.

“Do you know how angry I am at myself,” says the naked, raven-haired M16 agent as Bond kisses his way up her spine. But Bond rarely lets a life-threatening difference of opinion get in the way of a decent flirt.

The familiar faces returning from Casino Royale pose a far more subtle, acidic test for Bond who has to tread carefully around treacherous old friends: Jeffrey Wright’s lugubrious CIA agent Felix Leiter; Giancarlo Giannini’s silky string-puller, René Mathis; Jesper Christensen’s duplicitous Mr White; and Judi Dench, of course, as his witheringly unimpressed boss, M.

“When you can’t tell your friends from your enemies it’s time to go,” growls Dench.

Of course, Bond is having none of it. There are new necks to break and toys to play with as the action rips across Austria, Italy, and South America.

The global stakes are as precarious as ever. Amalric’s masterplan to destabilise a South American regime, install a dodgy dictator, General Medrano (Joaquin Cosio), and take control of the biggest source of fresh water in the world is fabulously cock-eyed. But that’s one of the main reasons why we can’t get enough of the greatest franchise of them all.

The director, Marc Forster, has absorbed the lucrative lessons discovered in Martin Campbell’s Casino Royale. He has also managed to pace his sequel much better. Royale felt slightly wheel-clamped by one too many longeurs. If anything, the crunching chase sequences in Quantum of Solace are even more magnificently dangerous. And the daredevil leaps and tumbles through glass roofs are just as sensational as the splintering high-speed pyrotechnics.

But it’s the amount of heartache and punishment that Craig’s new Bond absorbs that makes him look so right for our times.

Bond is no longer a work in progress. He is now the cruel, finished article.

votes as against McCain's 146 while he needed 270 to win the historic the race for the White House.

Mccain called Obama to congratulate him on victory.

US poll projections say that Obama is set to win more than 50 per cent of the vote.

"I called Obama and congratulated him. I recognise the significance of this election to African-Americans. We both recognise we've come a long way from old injustices," said John McCain, Republican candidate for President.

Mccain said: "We fought as hard as we could, failure is mine not yours."

A crowd expected to top 100,000 began gathering on Tuesday night in Grant Park in Chicago, where Obama scheduled an address after his victory.

Hundreds of thousands more - Mayor Richard Daley said he would not be surprised if a million Chicagoans jammed the streets - were expected to watch on a large television screen outside the park.

It will not be a walkover for India: Ponting

India completed a crushing victory over Australia by a record margin of 320 runs in the second Test to seize a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

But Ricky Ponting, who has been speaking exclusively to NDTV through this series, has come up with a warning to India, said the Border-Gavaskar series won't be a walk-over for the host.

"Too early to talk about decline won't go down without fight. nothing is putting more pressure on us than the way we are playing," Ponting said.

Australia have lost experienced stars Justin Langer, Adam Gilchrist, Glenn McGrath, and Shane Warne to international retirement.

"A series win is well within our reach, it won't be a walkover for India, we can't fill in shoes of Justin Langer, Adam Gilchrist, Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne," Australian skipper said.

"Mike Hussey has been our most consistent batsman in the tour so far, we need our experienced players to play as well as they can. So, the younger players have something to look up to. This is team capable of winning this Test series. we don't care what others are saying," he said.

Ponting also played down a spat with pace spearhead Brett Lee on the fourth morning after the bowler, who has struggled in the series, had been denied a bowl throughout the session.

The Australian skipper said he had told Lee he would not bowl first up, to take the pace off and deny easy runs to Indian as they looked to declare their second innings.

"It doesn't bother me, too much was made of it, Brett understood why he hadn't bowled in the opening session, nothing is putting pressure on us other than the way we're playing our cricket, skipper said.
